I was lucky enough to spend the 2021-2022 season as a game day photo editor for the NFL. Images are sent via FTP to our photo department’s OneDrive, which we have synced to our desktops. Within PhotoMechanic, we are then able to view, select, and caption images in real time. After making our selects, images are then cropped and toned in Lightroom.
Upon completion of the captioning and editing processes, images are then uploaded to their respective PhotoShelter folders for use by various departments and teams throughout the league.
My biggest task during Super Bowl week was to edit and caption photos of the Cincinnati Bengals arriving at LAX. Our photographer, Ryan Kang, was positioned along the tarmac ready to take photos of the team as they exited the airplane. I then was tasked with grabbing his memory card, ingesting through PhotoMechanic, and captioning/editing selects. Our social team was then able to have photos up within minutes.
Make it stand out
Prior to heading to the airport, it was also my job to build out a new metadata template specifically for this event. To do so, I simply took the metadata from a previous image of Ryan’s and made the necessary adjustments. This meant having an appropriate caption ready to go, using the proper keywords (CIN, AFC, Super Bowl, etc), and changing the event name and location.
Our workflow for the Super Bowl was similar to our workflow throughout the season. I was assigned two photographers, Cooper Neill and Kathryn Riley, to edit and caption images for. Below are just a handful of favorites from an incredibly exciting Sunday.
